To be honest, when I first registered for this course, I did not understand all of the fundamentals or the course's outcomes. I assumed it would be a small group assignment that would be submitted once a week, but I was completely wrong. After discussing how this project will proceed with my group members, my vision has become clearer and I have a better understanding of what I should prepare for this course. We named the group 'Nos Amis,' which means 'Our Friends,' because it seemed like the most apt metaphor for our project, which involves visiting orphanages. We decided to visit Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-kanak Istimewa Insan, as we would like to explore more about autism as well as to spread awareness. We hold a weekly meeting to keep everyone up to date on the job scope that has been distributed and also to ensure that the project runs smoothly.
On the day of the event, I was nervous and worried because I had never handled or talked to autistic children before. But as soon as we walked into the house, all of the children and staff greeted us cheerfully. I'm feeling overwhelmed because I realized I was worrying for nothing. We begin our event by playing an icebreaker game with all of the children. Even if some of them are difficult to talk to or are unable to speak, they make an effort to tell us their names. I was deeply moved at the time. After we got to know each other's names, we moved on to our original tentative event, which was to do an art and craft session. We gave each child a coloring set that we had prepared ahead of time. During the coloring session, they were all very well behaved. Each child has their own unique way of expressing their creativity. One boy astounded me with how neat and tidy his coloring paper was. They finish coloring because it is time for lunch. We decided to take a lunch break and go eat at nearby warong to recharged our energy. After a 1 hour break, we resume with hygiene talk given by one of our members. He demonstrates how to wear a mask and sanitize our hands in a proper way to all the kids. Following that, we had a sensory session with the kids. All of the children were given the chance to prepare Tangyuan, a Chinese dish, on their own. They are all very happy and excited. We also made egg sandwiches for the kids. I can see that all kids love it when it comes to food, as it is all food finished by the kids. Our final tentative event was to sing and dance together with the kids. They danced along with us. We shared a laugh. After a group photo session with all the kids and staff, we said our goodbye to the kids and staff.
I could not deny that I was completely exhausted after the event, but exhaustion mixed with joy of achievement meant that I was able to overcome my fear. I feel very proud of my group for overcoming all obstacles and making this project a success at the end of the day. It makes me realize that if given the chance, there is nothing we cannot accomplish. I would like to express my gratitude to all my lecturer, Dr Suhana, for giving me the opportunity to explore new things out of my comfort zone. I appreciate and cherish every single moment from the beginning of preparing for the event until the day of the event itself. This project taught me a lot, including how to work professionally in a group and how to deal with large corporations. I also would like to thank all my group members that are always guiding and assisting me throughout this project. This project would not be possible without all my group members' help, and I cannot begin to explain how appreciative I am. If I had the chance to volunteer again in the future, I would love to take the chance again, maybe a trip to Zoo with the kids. Once again, thank you to everyone that helps me directly or indirectly throughout this project. One last word, Be fearless!
